CAMP PROGRAM INFO: WHAT’S THE GIRLS LEADERSHIP SPECIAL SAUCE?

Professional & Crazy Fun Staff — Our Educators teach for us all year round. They live and breathe our renowned curriculum, and they’ve been practicing our trademark camp games for years, so they are more than ready to rumble.

Summer Program Director Cora Garner is an American Camp Association Member. She came to us after working at Cornell University, Stanford University, and most recently the University of California, Berkeley. Through her work in Higher Education, she has developed and taught courses that focus on identity and community development.

At Girls Leadership we want you to be true-to-you. Every day starts with community games. Our theatre-based workshops focus on developing personal and societal leadership, such as how to ask for what you need. In these sessions girls practice new tools for speaking up for themselves and for others.

We also create beautiful art projects, stay active outside, and always have a spirit theme for the day. These activities are designed to encourage girls to embrace who they are, reflect on what they believe, and give them an opportunity to express themselves creatively.

Both Jim and Donna are still the current directors, and are integrally involved in every single aspect of the company. In the summer, they are on call 24/7, available both to parents as well as to our leaders in the field.

We are an ACA accredited organization with an impeccable track record. We believe in the process of accreditation. It allows us to compare our standards to other professionals in the industry. Our accreditation allows us to follow specific standards related to leader screening including use of application forms, reference checks, personal interviews, work history review, and background checks.

Many years ago, we were the first company serving young adults to require that all leaders have a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) medical certification. WFR training is far more advanced than standard first aid or wilderness first aid. In addition to this certification, we carry extensive first aid kits on all of our programs that include antibiotics and epinephrine. Contents, protocols, and standing orders are reviewed and updated every year by our Medical Director who is an MD.

Since our inception, RLT has been on the cutting edge of technological advances in communication. We began carrying Iridium satellite phones on all of our programs as soon as they were available. Today we continue to carry the latest in emergency communication systems. According to geographic location, programs are equipped with satellite phones, ground-to-air radios, and/or cellular phones providing the possibility of 24-hour access to medical help in case of emergency.

Our programs include chess programs and camps thru USA Chess, Our Gamebuilder Video Game Creation Programs and our Active Learning Computer Enrichment Programs.

Our staff is, comprised of the best children's chess instructors in North America! The USA Chess camps are uniquely qualified to cater to the needs of the advanced scholastic player as well as the true beginner. USA Chess hit its first milestone in the summer of 2000 producing the largest chess camp ever held in the United States, with more than 250 students enrolled. What was most surprising, however, was the amount of absolute beginners in attendance - more than 50% of the total enrollment was just starting to play chess. This realization led to the national rollout tour of 100 camps in more than 70 cities. The annual tours have been immensely successful with several thousand campers attending this year alone.

USA Chess thrives on providing a structured environment that is extremely conducive to learning chess. We handpick the best children's chess instructors from all over the United States and bring them to each camp. We believe our team is most effective in teaching chess to children of all ages and levels. The exceptional organization and ever-fun curriculum has fueled much interest from scholastic players and coaches from around the country, prompting them to request USA Chess camps in their areas.

At the same summer camp locations, we also offer the immensely popular Gamebuilder Video Game Creation Camps, The Active Learning Computer Animation Programs, and other Computer Enrichment Programs such as Modding, Networking and Hosting with Minecraft. We now offer seven unique programs in all.

At these camps, children are assigned a computer for the week; they spend the week learning to create their own one-of- a- kind video games in our Gamebuilder Camps, Animation Projects in our Animation Camps, also Modding, Networking and Hosting with Minecraft.

Campers live in cabins with two counselors and six to nine other children of their own gender and age. Each cabin is under the direct leadership of a college-aged counselor. Counselors receive extensive training at camp prior to the campers' arrival. We maintain a staff-to-camper ratio of 1:5 or lower. CAMP LOCATION: Camp Chief Ouray is located on the 5,000 acre Snow Mountain Ranch (elevation 8,750 feet above sea level) approximately 80 miles or 1 .5 hours northwest of Denver, Colorado. Plan on 2 to 2.5 hours of driving time from the Front Range area.

CAMP FACILITIES: The youngest campers live in a lodge while older campers live in rustic camper cabins and teen campers may stay in teepees or platform tents. Everyone eats in the camp dining hall. There is an indoor swimming pool & a small reservoir for canoeing & fishing, low ropes course & high ropes course complete with a zipline. Other facilities include outdoor rifle range, archery range, gaga ball pit, climbing wall, horse barn and much more.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Our camper-to-counselor ratio ensures that your child will receive personal attention in a family-style cabin environment. Camp Chief Ouray conducts an intensive multi-part interview process. This includes multiple criminal, professional and personal background checks on each applicant to ensure that we have the best possible staff working with your child.

As Colorado's longest running summer camp, we have more than 100 years of tradition and experience that will ensure your child has a positive camp experience. Our programming offers a wide variety of activities and our "Freedom of Choice" programming allows each camper to create their schedule. Our Leadership Training Programs for teens are among the best in the country. With 5100 acres of mountains, streams, meadows and trails we really are nature's playground and a great place for your child to learn all the great opportunities the outdoors have to offer.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: LIT is the first step in the program, and it is for students who have completed the 9th grade, but not yet 18. During two weeks at camp, each group of LIT's will venture out on a 4-day/3-night backpacking trip, participate in activities around camp, live in a tipi village, complete a service project, and work with our day-camp program.

The SIT Program provides campers who have completed the 10th grade (but are not yet 18) with an incredible opportunity for skill development in an outdoor setting. The participants will embark on a 5-day/4 night backpacking trip in the Rocky Mountains, a 4-day/3-night rafting trip on the Upper Colorado River and mountain biking adventures in Fraser, CO while gaining valuable skills and instruction. Like the LITs, SITs live in the Tipi Village while they are at camp. Participants will complete 1-2 service projects around camp or in the community.

The CIT program is for participants who have completed the 11th grade and are genuinely interested in acquiring the skills necessary to be a camp counselor. The group will participate in a 4-day/3-night backpacking trip in Rocky Mountain National Park, a one day raft trip on the upper Colorado River, a CPR/First Aid certification course, a Leave No Trace certification course, and a week long training program similar to our staff training. The final two weeks are spent observing and assisting in the leadership of regular camp programs.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: YMCA of the Rockies is dedicated to providing a scholarship to 10% of our campers. Camper Scholarships are available on the basis of financial need. You can download the application on the Camp Chief Ouray website.

FAMILY CAMP SESSION(S): Round up the family and get away to the beauty of the Colorado Rockies and the good ol' days of summer camp! Parents, grandparents, teens and children enjoy traditional camp activities. Together you'll learn new skills, bond through teamwork and create lasting memories. Bring the entire family for a good dose of summer camp magic!

Camp Chief Ouray understands the importance of positive role models for today’s young people. We carefully recruit, select, and maintain staff for their enthusiasm, maturity, skills and ability to display wholesome values for our campers. Staff members are chosen through a detailed application and interview process. All staff backgrounds are checked against the Central Registry for Crimes Against Children and the Colorado or Federal Bureau of Investigation in accordance with Colorado licensing requirements.

A well-trained, enthusiastic staff is crucial to an exciting and unforgettable camping experience. Each staff member undergoes an extensive and professional training program together in preparation for our campers’ arrival.
